Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Beer of the Week!
As always, the Beer of the Week is originally presented on the Arrowhead Pride Tailgate on 610 Sports Radio as part of my “Defense and Beer of the Week” segment.
With a long holiday weekend in front of us, I decided this week to forgo some of my typical fare of double-dry hopped IPAs, big stouts, and funky belgians to give you, the Arrowhead Pride reader, a perfectly drinkable beer that everyone will enjoy.
This week’s Beer of the Week is Firestone Walker Brewing Company Firestone Lager!
A 4.5% ABV Helles Lager, Firestone Lager is an utterly crushable beer for a long weekend around the grill or on the lake. Made with German Pilsner malts and some Pale Malts, this clean, crisp lager will surprise you with its maltiness while still staying light in the body.
Don’t want a big hop presence? This beer is for you. With 17 IBUs, this beer has just a sprinkling of Hallertau Tradition, Spalter Select, and Saphir hops, all low-alpha acid German hops.
Whether you’re a craft beer aficionado or a staunch domestic beer drinker, Firestone Lager is definitely up your alley.
Firestone Walker Brewing Company was formed by two brothers in law, a winemaker and an expat (The Bear and the Lion) in 1996 in Paso Robles, California. They use a variation of the Burton Union system for brewing, an old oaken barrel fermentation system that only two brewers in the world utilize to this day for commercial brewing. This gives their beers a distinct characteristic in a market full of similar brewing styles.
Firestone Walker is an easy favorite for me, touting aggressive IPAs in their Leo V. Ursus line and their Luponic Distortion series. Their flagship Double Barrel Ale is one of my all-time favorites, and their Barrelworks series is chock full of amazing Wild Ales and Sours.
Good, clean lagers don’t get enough play in the craft beer market, with craft breweries trying to distance themselves from “Big Beer” similarities. It’s good to see a well-made one hit the market from an awesome brewery that can be a staple in any beer drinker’s fridge, no matter where their beer tastes may lie.
Make sure to swing by your local liquor store and scoop up some Firestone Lager this weekend if you can!
Check back here this time next week for the new Beer of the Week!
