Welcome to free agency! Almost. Free agency starts March 14 at 3 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) for the Kansas City Chiefs. We’ll be using this post to keep track of the Chiefs 2018 free agents, the roster moves they actually make along with some of the top rumors that come our way.
Free agency doesn’t start until March 14 but already the action is starting with the Chiefs among the busiest teams in this pre-free agency period. The Chiefs two trades (Alex Smith and Marcus Peters) can’t become official until March 14. They’ve let go of their most tenured Chief in Derrick Johnson as well as CB Darrelle Revis.
The Chiefs can also cut veteran players such as Derrick Johnson early so you’ll see moves from the Chiefs and other teams with veterans, sometimes called cap casualties (cut because of their cap hit).
Chiefs rumors and roster moves so far
March 1: Chiefs GM Brett Veach talked as if they expected LB Dee Ford to return. The Chiefs could save more than $8 million against the cap by releasing him before March 14 — if he’s healthy and can pass a physical after ending last season on IR.
February 23: Chiefs trade CB Marcus Peters and a sixth round pick to the Rams for a fourth round pick and a 2019 second round pick.
February 13: Chiefs will let Derrick Johnson hit free agency. His contract is set to void in March. DJ is the most tenured Chief but was obviously losing a step.
February 8: Chiefs cut CB Darrelle Revis. He was due $10 million in cap space next year so they cut ties.
